Is the gold rate the same across Tamil Nadu?
Very nearly. The Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association publishes a rate each morning, and shops across the state price against it.
Today the 22 karat rate is identical in all 14 cities we publish — ₹13,660 per gram.
So there is little point hunting for a cheaper town. What actually varies is the making charge and what a shop allows you for old gold — and those differ by thousands of rupees between two shops on the same street.
What is the rate by the sovereign?
In Tamil Nadu gold is talked about by the sovereign — the pavun — rather than by the gram. One sovereign is 8 grams of 22 karat gold.
At today's Chennai rate that is ₹1,09,280. When a family plans a wedding they count in pavun, not in grams.
