So you pay ₹7,044 more than the gold is worth. The making charge is an example at 25% — every shop charges differently, and this is the part you can bargain over. The rate itself is fixed.

What is today's silver rate in Gobichettipalayam?

Silver is ₹245 per gram in Gobichettipalayam today. That is ₹2,45,000 per kilogram.

Almost nobody buys silver by the single gram. Anklets, lamps, vessels and bars are all priced by the kilo, so both figures are given here.

The rate is updated twice a day, morning and evening. The tables above show the previous days, so you can see for yourself whether today is a rise or a fall.

Where does this price come from?

This is the rate set by MJDTA — the Jewellers and Diamond Traders' Association, Madras.

We do not calculate it. We read the association's published rate each morning and enter it unchanged. Shops in Gobichettipalayam price against this same rate, which is why it is the number worth showing you.

Some days we may not manage to enter it. On those days the page shows a rate calculated from the international gold price, and says clearly that it is an estimate. We never present the two as the same thing.

Why is the shop price higher than this?

The price on this page is the metal only. It is not the price of the jewellery.

A shop adds a making charge on top. That is usually 20% to 40%, depending on how detailed the piece is. Then 3% GST goes on the total. Some shops add a hallmarking fee too.

Here is today's example. 100 grams of silver holds ₹24,500 of metal. A 25% making charge adds ₹6,125. GST adds ₹919. You pay about ₹31,544.

Making charges change from shop to shop, and you can bargain over them. The rate itself you cannot change. So asking two shops for a price on the same piece is rarely wasted effort.

Should I buy by the gram or the kilo?

Silver jewellery such as anklets and toe rings is sold by the gram, but vessels, temple lamps and investment bars are all priced by the kilogram. At today's rate a kilogram is ₹2,45,000.

Silver moves more sharply than gold. Industrial demand — solar panels, electronics, batteries — pulls on the silver price in a way it does not on gold, so a quiet week for gold can still be a volatile one for silver.

What do 925 and 999 mean?

Gold is measured in karats out of 24. Silver is measured in parts per thousand. 999 means 999 parts silver out of 1,000, which is as pure as it is sold. 925 means 92.5% silver with the remaining 7.5% usually copper — this is what is called sterling silver.

The alloy exists because pure silver is too soft to hold a shape. Worn jewellery is therefore usually 925, while coins, bars and investment pieces are 999.

The BIS standard IS 2112:2025 recognises seven grades: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999. The ₹245 shown above is the rate for pure silver, so a 925 piece contains 92.5% of that value in metal.

Is silver hallmarking compulsory?

No. Hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery but remains voluntary for silver, so a shop selling unhallmarked silver is not breaking any rule. If you want it hallmarked, you have to ask.

Since 1 September 2025 silver hallmarking uses the HUID system. A hallmarked piece carries three marks: the BIS standard mark with the word SILVER, the purity grade such as 925, and a HUID code.

Entering that HUID in the BIS Care app returns the article type, purity, date of hallmarking, the testing centre and the jeweller's registration number. It takes about a minute and is the only way to verify a claim rather than take it on trust.

Why is the making charge higher on silver?

The labour in an anklet is much the same whether it is made in silver or gold, but the metal underneath costs a fraction as much. The same workmanship therefore lands as a far larger share of the final bill.

That is why silver making charges of 20% to 40% are common where gold sits nearer 8% to 25%. It is arithmetic rather than a markup aimed at you — but it does mean asking for the making charge separately matters more on silver, not less.

The ₹245 above is the metal only. A 100 gram anklet holds ₹24,500 of silver, and making charges plus 3% GST are added on top of that.

Why is the price different in each shop?

It is not. The silver rate is the same in every shop in Tamil Nadu. It is set for the whole state, not for one street.

What changes is the making charge, and what the shop gives you for your old silver. Two shops can show the same silver rate and still be thousands of rupees apart on the same piece.

Gobichettipalayam is a taluk headquarters in Erode district, known for farming, textiles and film shoots. As everywhere in Tamil Nadu, buying here follows the calendar more than the market: the wedding season, then Akshaya Tritiya, Diwali and Pongal. Shops are fullest in those weeks, and making charges hardest to bargain down.

So know this before you walk in. The rate on this page tells you what the metal is worth today. It cannot tell you whether one shop is charging fairly for the work, and no rate site can.

Should I buy jewellery or coins?

The difference between the two is the making charge, and you do not get it back.

Making is 20% to 40% of the silver value. When you exchange or sell later, the shop pays you for the metal only. It pays nothing for the work.

Today's numbers: 100 grams of silver holds ₹24,500 of metal. Buy it as a worked piece at 30% making and you pay about ₹32,806 with GST. Bring it back and you are quoted on the silver alone.

None of that is wrong if you wanted the jewellery. But if you are saving, plain bars and coins carry much smaller charges than worked pieces such as lamps and vessels.

Why does the price change every day?

Three things move it.

First, the international price. Gold trades all day around the world, and the price moves with demand, central bank buying and how nervous investors are.

Second, the rupee against the dollar. We import most of our gold. If the rupee weakens, Indian gold gets dearer even when the international price has not moved at all.

Third, local demand. Through the wedding season, and around Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya, more people buy and shop margins widen a little. And when import duty changes in the budget, it shows up in the rate within a day.

Is the Gobichettipalayam price different from Chennai?

The Gobichettipalayam rate today is identical to Chennai. That is deliberate rather than a rounding accident: we apply no local spread to Gobichettipalayam, because we have no evidence that one exists. Inventing a difference to make the page look locally researched would be the easy thing to do and would make the number worse.

Across all 14 cities we publish, the rate is the same today.

Either way this is an estimate of the prevailing market rate, not a quotation from any particular shop in Gobichettipalayam.

Common questions

What is the gold rate today in Gobichettipalayam?

Gold is ₹13,660 per gram for 22 karat in Gobichettipalayam today. 24 karat is ₹14,902 and 18 karat is ₹11,177. One sovereign, which is 8 grams of 22 karat, works out to ₹1,09,280. Rates are updated every morning and evening.

What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold?

24 karat is 99.9% pure gold. It is soft, so it is used for coins and bars rather than jewellery. 22 karat is 91.6% gold mixed with silver or copper, which makes it hard enough to wear. Most Indian jewellery is 22 karat.

Will my jeweller charge this exact price?

No. The rate here is the metal only. A shop adds making charges, usually 8% to 25% of the metal value, then 3% GST on the total, and sometimes a hallmarking fee. Your final bill will be higher.

How many grams is one sovereign of gold?

A sovereign, called a pavun in Tamil Nadu, is 8 grams of 22 karat gold. At today's rate that is ₹1,09,280.

How often does the gold rate change?

Twice a day, morning and evening. The rate moves with the international gold price, the rupee to dollar exchange rate, and Indian import duty, so it rarely stays the same two days running.
